2015 was a bad year for reading women. Out of the 130 books I read, only 12 of them were written by female authors. The reasons for this are numerous -and probably a combination of personal, cultural and institutional in their origin, a digression that raises questions I don’t particularly have any answers for.
What I intend to do, though, is read way more women this year than I did last year. Specifically, I want to read fifty novel-length projects by female writers. I’m very set on this, and I expect everyone reading this to hit me with as much shame and disparaging as they are personally capable should I fail.
Also, hit me up with recommendations. What literary/philosophical texts by female authors should I be digging into? Comment or email your suggestions my way!
That’s a good goal to have. To be honest, I’m not sure how many books I read last year that were written by women versus men.
Though I did read The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein last year for school. I had a really tough time getting through it. Stein’s writing style is definitely not for me. I hope you enjoy it more than I did!
Out of the 130 books I read last year, only 12 were written by women, hence this project. I’ve read 2 or 3 of Stein’s novellas and I enjoyed them, so I’m optimistic.
